Publishing Assistance

Want to publish, but don’t where?  We can help!

The library has Journal Citation Reports that can assess the impact factors of various journals in the sciences.  We can help to research whether the journal is discoverable in a major research database like PubMed, Embase or etc.  Interested in Open Access or complying with NIH Public Access Policy?  We can help investigate whether a particular journal is Open Access and how a particular journal publisher complies with the NIH Public Access Policy.  Need help?  Contact us at reference@westernu.edu or call/chat us!

PubMed or Medline?

As librarians we are asked the question pretty frequently.

In essence it really comes down to a few things

  • Contains all articles from all of the 5400 journals in indexed by PubMed whether biomedical or not (approx. 1 million citations)
  • Contains all non-indexed articles and OLDMEDLINE
  • It is the free search interface for the various databases associated with the National Center for Biotechnology Institute
  • Site specific tools, i.e. MyNCBI, etc.

    • Is the major database component in PubMed (approx. 21 million citations)
    • Only contains fully indexed biomedical journal citations
    • Is usually leased out to other database providers, i.e. OVID, EBSCO and isn't updated nearly as often as when it is used through PubMed

There is a great article about this from the National Library of Medicine located here http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/factsheets/dif_med_pub.html.

    PubMed Clinical Queries Redesign Preview

The PubMed Clinical Queries page will soon be redesigned to filter one search by three clinical research areas: Clinical Study Categories, Systematic Reviews, and Medical Genetics.

The Clinical Queries page has been reconfigured with columns to preview the first five citations of the results for the three research areas. The radio buttons for Clinical Study Categories and the checkboxes for Medical Genetics have been replaced with pull-down menus. While previewing results, you may make alternate menu selections for the Clinical Study Categories and Medical Genetics to modify those results of your search. Citations display in "Recently Added" order and link to the Abstract format in PubMed. "See all" links to the complete results.

Descriptions of the research areas appear under each column.
