NIH Public Access Policy

Have an NIH Grant?  Did you know that if you have an NIH grant you have to comply with the NIH Public Access Policy?  The law states, “The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall require that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication: Provided, That the NIH shall implement the public access policy in a manner consistent with copyright law.”

Benefits of the NIH Public Access Policy
•    makes freely available taxpayer-funded research;
•    advances science; and
•    improves health.

To help you learn and comply with the law, take a look at our research guide “NIH Public Access Policy” (link to guide at http://westernu.libguides.com/NIH_PAP.  This guide outlines the necessary four steps for compliance as well as incorporates frequently asked questions and other helpful resources to help you get familiar with the policy.  If you need help, do not hesitate to contact the librarians at reference@westernu.edu.

Missed Library Workshops

Have you missed some of the instructional sessions offered by the reference librarians on how to use the library’s resources?  If the answer is yes, you can check the workshop calendar for upcoming workshops and sign up ahead of time.

If you would like to learn about these resources, but are unable to attend at the time offered,you can always schedule a one-on-one meeting with one of the Reference Librarians by contacting the Reference and Outreach Department at reference@westernu.edu.

Resource Spotlight - Anatomy.TV

This week we focus on Anatomy.TV which provides 3D interactive anatomy of the human body. Our particular subscription covers
  • Regional anatomy - head, neck, spine, etc.
  • Sports & therapy functional anatomy
  • Specialties areas for Dentistry & Podiatry
Anatomy.TV allows you to go through each layer of the body, from skin to bone, and examine each of those layers and rotate the animation to view it from different angles.

You are able to isolate muscles, bone, nerve and blood vessels to find more information about each isolated item. You can quiz yourself on the knowledge you gain from the anatomy studied, as well as view MRI images, movies or animation if they are available for that section.

Authorized Pumerantz Library users can use Anatomy.TV on campus and off campus by using their Proxy login.

You may contact the library's Reference and Outreach office for more details about Anatomy.TV at reference@westernu.edu or 909-469-5323.
