The Harriet K. & Philip Pumerantz Library is hosting the National Library of Medicine traveling exhibit “Surviving & Thriving: AIDS, Politics, and Culture” from August 28, 2017 to October 7, 2017.  This exhibit explores the response to the AIDS epidemic since its 1981 appearance in the United States.

The Opening Reception will be held on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  The speakers will be Dr. Vishwanath Venketaraman, COMP; Dr. James Scott, College of Pharmacy; and the Reverend Tom Hostetler, Chaplain Hillcrest.

Fair Use Week

What is Fair Use and Why Should I Care? 

Fair use is the right to reuse existing copyrighted materials without permission under certain circumstances. It is very flexible. If you have ever written a book review or used a movie clip in class to illustrate a point, you have relied on fair use. So have writers of parody songs, documentary filmmakers, museums, publishers who translate works into Braille, and even Google.

To decide whether a use is fair, you need to weigh 4 factors:

• ·         The purpose and character of the use
• ·         The nature of the copyrighted work
• ·         The portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
• ·         The effect of the use upon  the potential market

You can use a fair use checklist to help you judge whether a use is likely to be fair. The following catchphrase is also a good rule of thumb: Use fairly. Not too much. Have reasons. Ask yourself: Am I doing something new with this? Or am I just copying the work for its same purpose? And does the amount I’m using make sense for what I’m trying to do?

Guest Speaker - Allen Callaci

The Harriet K. and Philip Pumerantz Library is proud to host a guest lecture by Allen Callaci. Mr. Callaci is a musician, professor, blogger, librarian and former employee of the Pumerantz Library. He is also the proud co-founder of the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library’s Star Wars Day.

Mr. Callaci will be on hand to talk about his book, Heart Like a Starfish, which chronicles his journey from emergency heart transplant surgery to recuperation to life post-surgery. His memoir is by turns humorous, heart-warming, and hopeful.

This book talk will take place Monday, February 6 from Noon to 1 pm in the Health Sciences Center – Compatriots Hall. Pomona campus faculty, staff and students may reserve a seat, walk-ins are welcome. COMP-NW campus students, faculty and staff may view the live stream in Lecture Hall 2. Light refreshments will be served on the Pomona campus.

Mr. Callaci will remain after the talk to sell and sign copies of his book. A portion of the proceeds of the sale will be donated to Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, were his procedure was performed.

Library Survey Response

Dear WesternU Distance and Rotations (DaR) students,

Thank you for participating in our recent survey. Your input is vital to the Harriet K. and Philip Pumerantz Library as we continue to assess and improve our services. In order to “close the loop,” we would like to share with you some of the concerns you expressed in the survey, and what we are doing to address these opportunities for improvement.

Many of you noted that you had not heard of a number of services vital to DaR students: Interlibrary Loan (ILL), Books-by-Mail, Online Chat, Research Guides, and Ask a Librarian. Librarians are preparing “before-you-go” presentations to provide you with the information you need about library services during your rotations. Some of you also expressed difficulty with navigating the library’s webpages. Our new Web Committee is hard at work editing our web pages to make information and services easier to locate. A new web page and a research guide have already been created for the COMP-NW program. In addition, the liaison librarian for COMP-NW will make additional trips to the Lebanon campus to provide group workshops and one-on-one consultations.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is one way you can obtain articles that the Pumerantz Library does not have in its collection. Your survey responses revealed that the library’s ILL service could be advertised better, with simple instructions, and additional staff available to answer questions.  The library will train all staff to be able to answer basic questions about Interlibrary Loans. Questions requiring more expert attention will be answered within 24 to 48 hours on weekdays and 48 to 72 hours on weekends. The library will also create a searchable FAQ specifically for Interlibrary Loan questions. 

Some of your responses were in relation to the depth and breadth of the Pumerantz Library’s electronic collection (databases, ebooks, and ejournals). The library has over 25,000 electronic journals and over 1200 eBooks and we are regularly reviewing the collection to ensure that it is aligned with individual college and University learning outcomes, and for curricular appropriateness.

Unfortunately some of the issues brought up in the survey are not controlled by the library, such as the formatting of eBooks and electronic journals, the availability to download PDF chapters, etc. These features are controlled by the publishers.

3rd Annual Research Mixer

Please join us for the 3^rd Annual Research Mixer, co-sponsored by the Harriet K. and Philip Pumerantz Library and the Office of Research and Biotechnology.

The Research Mixer is an opportunity for researchers to share their current work in a friendly, interactive venue. This event also demonstrates the value of the WesternU Research Clusters, in bringing together partners from different colleges seeking solutions to critical unresolved problems in the health sciences.

Staff from IT, University Advancement, and the Library will provide information regarding the many services available to researchers.

If you would like your research poster to be included, please submit your poster information here no later than June 7, 2016. Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to participate. Space is limited to 20 submissions. Posters with dimensions up to 44” x 65” can be accommodated.

2nd Annual Food for Fines Drive

The Food for Fines program will run from December 2 to December 14, 2015. During this time period the Pumerantz Library will waive $1 worth of outstanding fines on your Library account for every one non-perishable or canned food item. There is no limit on how much you may donate.

The Food for Fines program only applies to Pumerantz Library fines only, it may not be applied to replacement or damaged items fees or charges from other WesternU entities.

All food items collected will be donated to the 2nd Chance Thrift Store, a non-profit community outreach organization, that benefits several sober living home facilities in Pomona.

J and K Virtual Reality Learning Center

The Pumerantz Library is the home to the J and K Virtual Reality Learning Center (VRLC). Within the VRLC are four pieces of instructional tech, Anatomage, zSpace, Occulus Rift and iPads. These pieces of technology exist at other institutions individually, what makes the VRLC unique is that they are all combined in one space and used with one another. This virtual component, combined with traditional gross anatomy, makes for a richer, more innovative curriculum.

Anatomage is a virtual cadaver that users may rotate through 360 degrees, slice through the entire cadaver, remove or highlight certain anatomical structures.

zSpace uses 3D glasses and a stylus to manipulate and "dissect" anatomical structures.

Our two Occulus Rift headsets are pre-loaded with "tours" of the ear, head and throat and allows users to move through and listen to instruction about each section of the anatomy.

The iPads are loaded with anatomy apps provided by fusion.tech at Stanford.

Also unique to the VRLC is that after instruction has concluded for the day, faculty may reserve the room to create content for future lessons, and students may reserve the individual VRLC components for study. Both faculty and students must complete an instructional session with library staff to certify that they know what each item does and what they can and can't do with them.
