New at the Library! Archives of Ophthalmology

Pumerantz Library now has the Archives of Ophthalmology from 1998 to present.  The Archives of Ophthalmology, published by the American Medical Association, is a peer-reviewed ophthalmology and visual science journal.  It aims to be the indispensable source of ophthalmic knowledge for the generalist, subspecialist, and trainee and to publish innovative, clinically relevant research for the vision scientist.  You can find the journal in the Electronic Journal section in the Electronic Resources page of the Harriet K. & Philip Pumerantz Library website. 

Opening Doors Exhibit - Closing Soon

The traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine: Opening Doors – Contemporary African American Academic Surgeons will end on March 26, 2011. Be sure to stop by and see the exhibit before it is removed and sent to the next host institution.

Physicians, social media, and professionalism

There was a letter to the editor recently published; Feb. 9, 2011 305(6), 566, in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), about the professionalism of physicians in social media, specifically Twitter.

The authors of the paper; Chretien, Azar, and Kind, wanted to determine the, "characteristics of self-identified physicians on Twitter and how they use Twitter, with a specific focus on professionalism." Their conclusions showed that overall the self-identified physicians sharing of information had a positive effect, but they were concerned with HIPAA complaiance, and unprofessional content.

What are your thoughts on physicians using social media to provide health information in light of the recent AMA Policy Professionalism in the use of Social Media and this article by Chretien, Azar, and Kind?

Android users rejoice, VisualDx has finally created an app for the Android platform. You can now enjoy the power of ViusalDx on your Droids, & G2's! Currently enrolled students, faculty and staff may sign up for VisualDx for Android here and click on "Get VisualDx mobile free".

Keyword enhanced search VisualDX has "expanded the Look up a Diagnosis search to include more general key terms we have found users to be entering frequently." You can now search more general terms and retrieve reliable results.

VisualDx and Up To Date have teamed up to offer enhanced services. Now when you perform a search in Up To Date, if the topic you look up has a correlation to topics or images covered in VisualDx you will be provided with an icon to view the diagnosis, treatment options, and images in VisualDx.
